Sister Merdis Lewis Gordon.
During this time of loss, may they find comfort in the love of those around them and strength in the promise of God's eternal peace.
Merdis Lewis Gordon, aged 88, passed away peacefully at her home on March 10, 2025. Born on May 23, 1936, in Athens, LA, she was the daughter of the late Earl Lewis, Sr., and Jessie Mae Bennett Lewis. Merdis was a graduate of Athens Negro High School and later moved to Galveston, TX, where she worked at UTMB and Shriners Burns Hospital, retiring after over 30 years of dedicated service.
Merdis accepted Christ at an early age and was initially a member of Point Pleasant CME Church in Claiborne Parish, LA. As an adult, she converted to Catholicism and joined St. Patrick's Church in Galveston, TX. She was the devoted wife of the late Obie Bryant Gordon, Jr., and is now reunited with him.
She is survived by her loving sisters, Beneath Smith, Christine Allen (Paul), and Nettie Evans; brother-in-law, Earnest Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends including Barbara Stewart, Cedrick Brown, George Umoh, and Joe Wiley. Merdis will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
A visitation will be held at 9:00AM on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at the Espanola "BB" Johnson Memorial Chapel of E.R. Johnson Family Mortuary in Galveston, TX, followed by the Rosary at 10:00AM and a funeral service at 11:00AM, presided over by Deacon Robert "Buzz" Standridge. A Home Going service will take place at 11:00AM on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Point Pleasant CME Church in Homer, LA, with Pastor Carol Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at Point Pleasant Memorial Garden in Homer.
