Obituary

Ms. Laverne Brown.

Laverne was quiet and mild mannered.  She was kind, passionate, transparent, and trustworthy. Her warm smile and gentle spirit endeared her to all whom she encountered. Whether Laverne was the Librarian greeting people at her job, in the community, or helping a friend, she was a beacon of light.  The loving spirit and compassionate nature that Laverne expressed will be remembered and cherished always by her family, friends, co-workers, and others.

This is not goodbye, just good night…We will see you again...

Laverne Brown was born December 7, 1944, in Haynesville, Louisiana, to the union of Elaine Gipson Brown and J.D. Brown.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers; Joe E. Brown and Willie D. Brown, PhD, her sisters; Geneva Brown, Bettie Brown Thomas (RN), and Brenda Brown Bradford (Attorney at Law); her grandparents; Martha and Crawford Henderson (best barbeque in town).

Laverne accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Laverne converted and attended Soka Gakkai International BUDDHIST Temple in Dallas, TX.

Laverne graduated from Woodson High School (Haynesville, LA) in the Class of 1962.  After graduation, she attended Grambling State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree.  Laverne earned a Master's Degree from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  Laverne was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

In her earlier years, Laverne taught school in Arkansas then moved to Baltimore, Maryland. She later moved to Dallas, Texas and that became her home. Laverne frequently visited her hometown of Haynesville, Louisiana where she loved to socialize with family.

Laverne worked at the Dallas Public Library, City of Dallas, as a Master Librarian, for over 40 years.  She was the North Central District Manager for Dallas Libraries.  She truly loved serving people in the public sector and giving back to her community on special projects. Laverne volunteered at the Buddhist Temple and loved to manage their on-site library.

Laverne leaves to cherish her memory: Her nephew; a very special person in her life, Joseph Henry Brown (Lil Joe), Bossier City, Louisiana; Her siblings, five sisters and one brother; Bonnie Brown Richardson (Chris), Emma Brown Armstrong, Linda Brown Levingston all of Haynesville, LA; Minnie Brown Roberts (Justus) of Tampa, FL; David Brown (Katrina) of Mansfield, TX; and Sandra Brown Ward (Benjamin) of Grand Prairie, TX.  Her sister-in-law; Clareace Cotton Brown of Haynesville, LA; A special cousin, Virginia Gipson of Toledo, OH, special friends; Emma Jean Brown of Bossier City, Louisiana, Christine Bell of Dallas, Texas, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, dear friends, colleagues, and neighbors.
