Ernestine Aubrey
Lewis
January 6, 1936 – June 21, 2023
With hearts of sorrow, The Memorial Funeral Home Staff requests your prayers for the family and friends of
Mrs. Ernestine Aubrey Lewis.
I was born early on a Sunday morning, just as the sun was rising over the banks on January 6,
1936, in Sarepta, Louisiana (a little territory called Crossroad), which later became Porterville.
I was the fifth child out of fourteen born to Hollie Sr. and Pearlie Mae (Robinson) Aubrey. I was
preceded in death by my siblings, Abe, Eva Vashti, Hollis Jr., Luke K., George Henry, Carrie Lee
(Mickey), Emmer Lou, and Clara Ruth; nephews, James, Willie James, Tyrone, Kenneth, and
Rashad; and nieces, Vera and Barbara.
Marriage & Family
I met the love of my life, Elmore Lewis, in Springhill, Louisiana, right behind where the old
Citizen's Bank was. We were married by Reverend A. W. Grant at my parents' house on June
23, 1956. To this union, we had three children: Gerald Glen, Ronnie Sedale, and Janice Denise.
Ronnie was born on October 10, 1958, became our little angel on October 13, 1958, and was buried
in St. Paul Cemetery. We fostered a daughter, Tina Bernette Harden, and became the godparents
of Janelle, Troy, and Cheyenne Courtney.
Christian Experience
I joined Harrison Chapel MBC in Springhill, Louisiana under Reverend A. T. Taylor in 1949.
After marriage, I united with my husband's church, St. Paul MBC in Taylor, Arkansas under
Reverend J. A. Taylor.
My Christian experiences include some of the following duties and memberships: deaconess,
church clerk, church secretary, senior and youth choir president, Sunday school teacher of class
#1 the little ones, usher, announcement clerk, mission circle instructor, Mission Society, AR State
Consolidated Baptist Convention, Columbia District Association, National Baptist Association
of America, and National Congress.
I loved listening to and singing gospel songs, my specialty was solos. Some of my favorite singers
and groups were Mahalia Jackson, Reverend James Cleveland, Clark Sisters, Shirley Caesar,
Caravans, Inez Andrews, Dorothy Norwood, Albertina Walker, and Al Green. "Precious Lord"
and "Give Me My Flowers While I Yet Lived" were my favorites to sing.
